Understanding prolonged grief
Online, self-paced course
Grief is a natural response to loss, but for some, it can become prolonged and deeply disruptive.
This course is designed for professionals, students, carers and volunteers in healthcare, mental health, social services, and community care who want to deepen their understanding of prolonged grief and provide informed support to those at heightened risk.
Participants will gain insights into the latest research on Prolonged Grief and Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD), and how these conditions can disrupt daily life and well-being. The course covers key risk factors, evidence-based models, and practical strategies to provide effective, compassionate support.
Upon completion, participants will be better equipped to help prevent the escalation of grief into long-term mental health challenges, fostering healing and resilience in those they support.

Developed through real-world expertise and backed by trusted partnerships
Since 2022, Griefline has partnered with the NSW Ministry of Health to deliver enhanced bereavement care for individuals at risk of Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD). This ongoing collaboration underpins the credibility of our training and reflects our commitment to providing evidence-informed support to those navigating complex grief.
Our Understanding Prolonged Grief training was designed by Dr Louise Cooper-Shaw, an academic with a background in Applied and Educational Psychology. Drawing on her extensive experience supervising Griefline’s volunteer counsellors and supporting help-seekers through grief, Louise crafted this program to bridge theory and practice in a meaningful, accessible way.
Since its launch, the course has been continually refined with insights from digital education specialists, clinicians, and researchers to ensure it remains current, practical, and grounded in lived experience and contemporary grief theory.
