We all experience the loss of someone or something important to us at some point in our lives. Grief is a natural human response to this loss, and everyone’s experience of it is different.
While many associate grief with the death of a loved one, other forms of loss can result in grief, including:
- You have experienced the loss of a beloved pet
- You have lost your home, business or livelihood
- You are feeling isolated and alone in your loss
- You are experiencing isolation and loneliness due to the loss of a loved one or connection with your family or community
- You are supporting a recently bereaved friend or family member
- You are experiencing a relationship break-up
- You are experiencing a sense of grief after your own or a loved one’s health diagnosis
- You are grieving the loss experienced due to natural disasters
- You’re grieving due to your children moving out of home
- You are grieving a miscarriage or inability to conceive

Griefline’s skilled and compassionate telephone support volunteers are trained to listen and hold space for you no matter where you are in your grief experience, or what you are grieving for.Â
Our volunteers are specially trained in supporting grief and loss. During the call you may choose to share your grief story, openly express your emotions, learn coping strategies or get help to find more resources to help support you. Â
Helpline calls are for around 20 minutes.Â
Yes, we encourage individuals to utilise our services whenever needed to navigate their grief journey effectively. However, to ensure fair access for all users and to maintain the quality of support, we have instituted an ‘overuse of service’ clause. This clause defines ‘overuse’ as seven or more interactions with our services within a one-week period. For more information, click here to access the Griefline Services Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs).
Talking about your grief and allowing your emotions to be expressed can be tiring. Limiting support call bookings to 20 mins helps to conserve your energy and that of our volunteers.Â
You can call again at another time or request a callback if you are looking for further grief support.Â
If you are a resident of NSW, you are able to access free counselling sessions through the Integrating Grief Program, funded by the NSW Ministry of Health.Â
The helpline is staffed entirely by volunteers who have all been trained to support people experiencing grief and loss.Â
