What’s next for Griefline – and how you can help

Thursday 27th March 2025
Over the past few weeks, we’ve witnessed the power of community.
Thousands of you, our volunteers, service users, sector peers, and supporters, spoke up when our Helpline was at risk of closure. You wrote to your MPs, shared your stories, rallied behind us online, and made it clear that grief support matters.
Because of your efforts, Griefline’s nationally accredited Helpline has received interim government funding to remain open until 30 June 2025.
We are incredibly grateful. But the reality is, this is a temporary reprieve, not a long-term solution.
We still face a significant funding gap, and without urgent action, we risk finding ourselves in the same precarious position in just a few months. That’s why we’re inviting you to help us build a more sustainable future for grief support in Australia.

Why this matters
Griefline’s helpline is Australia’s only free, nationwide grief and bereavement telephone support service accredited under the National Safety and Quality Digital Mental Health Standards (NSQDMH). Last year, we received more than 30,000 calls — a 112% increase from the year before.
Our trained volunteers provide compassionate support to more than four people every hour on our helpline. And yet, like so many vital mental health services, we are being asked to do more with less.
Griefline stands with Mental Health Australia’s pre-election campaign, calling for long-term investment in early intervention services. Because grief support shouldn’t be something we have to fight for — it should be built into our national mental health strategy.
As a collective, we’ve kept the Helpline open, now let’s build a sustainable future
We’re not giving up — and we hope you won’t either. Whether you donate, enrol in training, or share your story, your support keeps us going.
Every call answered is a lifeline. Every action you take brings us one step closer to a future where no grieving Australian is left behind.
