Supporting Australians through grief and loss
In late 2025, Griefline joined SANE Australia. Since then, we’ve been working to enhance and expand the support available to Australians experiencing grief and loss.
Over the coming months, you’ll notice some changes to how grief support is accessed through the Griefline website and Helpline as we continue bringing grief support into SANE’s services and support pathways.
Our goal is simple: continue to deliver high quality, accessible and free supports for people experiencing grief and loss.
Continuing Griefline’s legacy
For decades, Griefline has supported Australians through some of life’s most difficult experiences.
Whether grieving the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, family estrangement, loss of health, financial hardship, or another significant life change, thousands of people have turned to Griefline for connection, understanding and support.
That commitment remains unchanged.
By bringing Griefline’s services into SANE, we’re building on this legacy and ensuring grief support continues to be accessible and responsive to the needs of the community.
Enhancing access to grief support
Grief can affect every aspect of a person’s life and often exists alongside other experiences, including trauma, loneliness, caring responsibilities, and mental health challenges.
Through SANE, people seeking grief support will be able to access an enhanced range of support options, including:
- grief and loss information and resources
- one-to-one support
- facilitated group programs
- online peer support communities
- Service navigation and support pathways
- additional mental health and wellbeing supports where needed.
This integrated approach helps ensure people can access the support that best meets their individual needs.
What this means for people seeking support
As part of this integration, over the coming months we are updating the Griefline website to ensure continued access to grief and loss supports, and open access to a broader range of supports.
If you’re looking for support with grief and loss, support remains available.
During this period:
- People can still access information on the Griefline website.
- Callers to the Griefline Helpline will be automatically redirected to SANE’s Service Enquiries Line during operating hours: Monday – Friday, 10am – 8pm (AEST / ADST).
- SANE staff will support callers by providing direction to appropriate SANE support services, resources, or relevant external programs and services.
- Online peer-support community for grief and loss will become available through the SANE online community Forums.
- Further information on SANE services can be accessed on the SANE’s website, https://www.sane.org/recovery-club
It is important to note that SANE’s Service Enquiries Line does not provide anonymous or immediate ad-hoc counselling or crisis support. Instead, staff can provide information about SANE services, including how to access programs and online community forums, information and resources, as well as information about other relevant services. SANE’s online forums provide an anonymous peer-support community, professionally moderated 24/7.
These changes are designed to provide a smoother experience and ensure people can continue to connect with support when they need it.
Looking ahead
Bringing Griefline and SANE together creates an opportunity to strengthen grief support for Australians into the future.
By combining Griefline’s long history of supporting people through grief and loss with SANE’s national services, community and digital support infrastructure, we can help more people access the support they need, when they need it.
We look forward to continuing Griefline’s legacy as part of SANE and supporting Australians experiencing grief and loss for many years to come.
