Understanding road trauma and grief

Understanding road trauma and support options

Monday 19th January, 2026

Road trauma can have wide-ranging emotional and practical impacts on individuals, families, and communities. Together with Amber Community, we have developed a new resource that explores common emotional responses to road trauma, outlines available support options and pathways, and provides guidance for families, friends, and communities supporting someone affected.

A collaborative resource supporting individuals, families, and communities affected by road trauma

Road trauma can bring a complex mix of grief and trauma, shaped by sudden loss, shock, and a sense of injustice that can deeply disrupt a person’s life. These emotional and psychological reactions are common and understandable, but they can be overwhelming without the right support.

Compassionate, trauma-informed care can help people feel less alone as they navigate healing over time. Recognising the impact of road trauma and knowing where to find support is an important step in recovery.

In collaboration with Amber Community, we’ve developed a road trauma fact sheet to provide clear, practical information for Australians affected by road trauma.

The fact sheet covers:

  • Understanding common emotional responses
  • Support options and pathways
  • Guidance for families, friends, and communities

This resource is designed to help anyone impacted by road trauma access information and support when they need it most.
