The roles of a Griefline volunteer and a First Responder seem worlds apart, yet one thing connects us…a shared experience of grief & loss in the community.

Whether a police officer, firefighter, paramedic or emergency health worker, our First Responders have always shown courage and dedication to protect our communities. Their work is instrumental in keeping us safe and reducing the occurrence of grief and loss in our communities.

The recent events of deadly bushfires and the COVID-19 pandemic required those on the front line to go above and beyond…navigating the toughest of human experiences with little precedent.

So how do first responders manage when they bear witness to loss? How do they hold it together in a crisis?

“Well, sometimes, you don’t. Which is fine because you’re human. But I think it’s a real honour. I find what I do a real privilege,” says Margot, a palliative care nurse in Victoria.

It’s a privilege that presents Margot with all manner of grief, fear and exhaustion on a daily basis but with comradery, professionalism and a little secret, Margot feels like she can ‘get through’ almost anything.

Discover Margot’s secret in her inspiring story featured on the Griefline Resource Hub alongside a raft of informative articles and self-care strategies for anyone going through their own form of grief, loss, loneliness and isolation. With Griefline you are never alone.

Change brings discomfort.

The coronavirus pandemic has forced us all to move from the familiarity of the past to the discomfort of an uncertain future.

So how do we adjust to this new reality? According to Julia Samuels (UKCP, BACP Acc. Psychotherapist) we need to take small steps.
The first step is to find a way to express our experience because when we match our words to our feelings it triggers a release and openness to change.

The new Griefline forum dedicated to COVID-19 is a safe and anonymous space to express in words how the uncertainty of the pandemic has compounded your experience of grief, loss, isolation and loneliness. Take the first step towards adjustment to the new COVID-normal by sharing your experience with our online community today.
